Research looked at where in the US the most Benzodiazepines and Opioids were being prescribed to Seniors. What they found was that this is still a prevalent practice in the Deep South and rural western states. They found that at a minimum 3 times the level of sedatives are being prescribed. Some Primary Care Physicians were prescribing more than 6 times their peers.
There are warnings against use for Seniors with these drugs as there are safety concerns against use. These prescription drugs are also some of the most abused. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has advised against the combined use as it can cause central nervous system depression resulting in slowed or difficulty breathing and death. The FDA has recommended that these two classes of medications are prescribed on a very limited basis. The American Geriatric Society has them listed as a drug to avoid for those 65 years and older.
Unfortunately, these medications are still being prescribed at alarming rates.
